This compilation of poems has always raised doubts about the true authors behind them.

From the first surviving edition, only fragments remain, and the title of the work remains unknown. In the second edition published by Jaggard in 1599, the title was added, and authorship was attributed to William Shakespeare. It is said that the publisher may have attributed the works to Shakespeare solely for the purpose of increasing sales. However, it is confirmed by prominent scholars that many of the passages were indeed written by Shakespeare as precursors to «Venus and Adonis,» among others.
